According to IGFA, the World Record Pirarucu was recently granted. The Pirarucu was caught in August 2008 on the Rio Negro in Brazil by Jakub Vagner. Vagner caught the pirarucu on fresh cut bait. It weighed 286 lbs 9 oz. The Pirarucu is often referred to as the largest freshwater fish. It is an obligate air breather often rising to the surface to inspire a gulp of air. They are very difficult to catch on hook and line.
