On Feb 9, 2010 angler Bill Gassmann of Des Moines, Iowa, caught a potential World Record Peacock Bass weighing in at 28lbs. The old record was 27lbs caught by Doc Lawson on Dec 4 1994.

Gassmann was fishing a clown colored Luhr Jensen Big Game Woodchopper slim in clown coloration and was fishing a tributary of the Upper Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon.

LAKE WINNEBAGO STURGEON SPEARING COMES TO AN END

The often controversial sturgeon spearing season came to an end on Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin after the quota set by the Wisconsin DNR was met. The quota was reached in 6 days. The DNR allows the spearing of 350 juvenile females, 700 adult females, and 1000 male sturgeon. Every February, over 3000 portable ice shanties are set-up throughout Lake Winnebago for a chance to harvest a sturgeon. This year a monster 212lbs 84.2in sturgeon was speared. For those not familiar, a hole in cut through the ice where a fish decoy is dropped into waiting for a sturgeon to swim by where it is then speared with the use of a pronged spear.
